A 15-year-old boy named Derek Parker Aghnaanga from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, was rescued after two days adrift on an overturned boat in the Bering Sea. The teenager had set out on Friday, September 4, with his older brother and cousin on an 18-foot fishing boat from Savoonga and was supposed to return home by noon on Sunday. However, their boat never returned.
Details of the Incident
Unfortunately, Derek's brother and cousin lost their lives in this incident. According to reports, a fishing line had gotten caught in the boat's motor, and initial attempts to free it were unsuccessful. This caused the boat to capsize. Following the incident, the U.S. Coast Guard began a search for survivors, although the chances of finding them seemed very slim.

Rescue in Harsh Conditions
On the morning of Tuesday, a Coast Guard aircrew found Derek 4 miles away from St. Lawrence Island and 164 miles from the mainland. Derek was sitting on top of the overturned boat and, according to a relative, clung to the boat while the cold water reached about 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit). He informed the Coast Guard that his brother was still under the boat and that his cousin had exited the boat the previous night and drowned.
Therefore, a nearby fishing vessel safely transported Derek to shore, and later the bodies of his two companions were recovered. Derek's family stated that he believed he would be rescued and maintained his spirits by kneeling and praying until he was found.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers in cold seas and marine conditions. Each year, only about 12 cases of small boat capsizing in the Bering Sea are reported, and while larger vessels generally have a high crew survival rate, the sinking of small boats often results in fatalities. However, Derek's rescue is a rare and remarkable case of survival in such harsh conditions.
