The Donald Trump administration has asked Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to stop attacks on Russian diesel facilities. Trump announced during the Ireland golf tournament on Sunday that these attacks have caused a global fuel shortage and diesel prices in the United States have reached a new record.
Consequences of the attacks on the global fuel market
Trump stated: "Zelensky needs to do something. He needs to stop the attacks on diesel in Russia." These remarks come as the average diesel price in the United States has reached $6.20 per gallon, which is a historic record. The price of regular gasoline has also reached $4.31 per gallon.

In recent months, Ukraine has consistently attacked Russia's oil and gas industry, and in response to these attacks, Russia has begun fuel rationing. In July, Russia banned diesel exports. Zelensky defended Ukraine's tactics by referencing attacks on Russian refineries, stating: "Each of our sanctions means a reduction in resources that serve Russia's war machine and is a step towards peace."
Current state of the diesel market and its implications
According to international reports, diesel and gasoil exports from Gulf countries averaged 390,000 barrels per day in August, which is less than a quarter of the pre-war level with Iran. This significant decrease is due to traffic restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz and Ukraine's attacks on Russia's refining system, exacerbating diesel supply issues.
The International Energy Agency reported that diesel prices in the United States reached over $200 per barrel in early September, which is 94% higher than pre-war levels. Diesel and other similar fuels account for nearly 30% of global oil demand. This situation not only affects the domestic market in the United States but also puts pressure on the entire global fuel market.
In this context, Zelensky continues his attacks, emphasizing that these actions help weaken Russia's military power. He also referenced Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, stating: "The Russians are attacking food warehouses, fuel stations, and other civilian facilities." These actions have increased tensions and complexities in the global energy market.
