Greg Stanton, CEO of Meta, stated in a message on Tuesday that AI companies do not need an industry-wide agreement to slow down development in the face of safety concerns. He believes that market pressure motivates companies to ensure that AI systems align with their users' intentions.
Labs' Responsibility in Safe Development
Stanton stated, "Every lab has a responsibility and motivation to proceed safely with the necessary speed in training their models." He also noted that trust and alignment quickly become the most important capabilities that distinguish AI models and representatives. He added, "Any lab that does not focus on alignment will fall behind."

Stanton referred to Meta's decision to delay the Muse model for several months to enhance safety and security, saying, "We did not ask others to do this before us. We just did it ourselves." These remarks come amid a growing debate about the necessity of slowing down frontier AI development.
Call for Oversight and Independent Assessments
Anthropic has called for government regulations and mechanisms that allow leading labs to halt development in the event of warning signs. In contrast, other tech leaders, including Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, have emphasized independent assessments and personal accountability for AI companies.
Alexander Wang, Head of AI at Meta, also responded to Stanton's remarks in a separate message, stating that labs need strong governance, external evaluators, and independent oversight for model launches. Wang clarified, "Competition in the field of automated improvement is one of the riskiest paths to losing control over powerful models." He also added, "Meta provides a significant majority of its computing power for the benefit of people, not in competition for automated improvement, and other labs can make such decisions."
