Coinbase's stock has risen 18% over the past month, but it has decreased by 44% over the past year. The company's revenue has declined due to a decrease in crypto trading volume.

Coinbase's stock (Coinbase Global) has increased by 18% in the past month and is currently trading at around $175 per share. However, this stock has decreased by about 44% compared to last year. The market is currently paying 7.3 times Coinbase's revenue, which is more than double the price-to-earnings ratio for the S&P 500. The question arises whether what Coinbase is building is worth more than its losses.

Decline in Coinbase Revenue

The decline in Coinbase's revenue is due to the cyclical nature of crypto trading. The company's revenue in the second quarter of 2026 has decreased by 18.5% compared to last year, reaching $1.2 billion. Additionally, according to the company's own report, the volume of crypto trading has decreased in this quarter. The revenue for the past 12 months has been $6.3 billion, down from $7.0 billion last year, although over the past three years, revenue has grown at an annual rate of 37.6%, compared to 5.9% for the S&P 500.

New Strategies and Financial Sustainability

In this quarter, the number of Coinbase One subscribers reached its highest level. The increase in subscribers while trading volume has decreased indicates that Coinbase's revenue has become independent of crypto price fluctuations. Furthermore, management has stated that revenue from services and subscriptions has grown over the years.

Coinbase is also developing prediction markets and perpetual trading, and management has pointed to new options such as stock trading. This growth requires investment in a shared economy with its partners, but management believes this strategy will be effective in the long term.

Despite reported losses, Coinbase has managed to convert 27.3% of its revenue into operating cash flow, while this figure is 21.8% for the market. Over the past 12 months, the company has generated $1.7 billion in liquidity, although it ultimately faced a net loss of $1.0 billion.

If the crypto market changes again, Coinbase covers 34.1% of its total assets with cash and equivalents, while this figure is only 6.6% for the market. However, the company's stock fell by 81% in 2022 and took 20 months to return to its previous peak.
