With a production of 13,603 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas in 2025, Texas is recognized as the leader in natural gas production in the United States. This amount equals 28.5% of the total natural gas production in the country and demonstrates the dominance of this state in the energy industry in America.
Major Natural Gas Producers in the U.S.
The total natural gas production in the United States reached 47.7 trillion cubic feet in 2025, with only a few states responsible for a significant portion of it. This production primarily comes from rich shale formations such as Permian, Marcellus, Haynesville, and Eagle Ford.

Following Texas, Pennsylvania ranks second with 7,676 billion cubic feet (16.1%). Together, these two states account for nearly 45% of the total natural gas production in the United States. This production mainly comes from the Permian shale in Texas and the Marcellus in Pennsylvania.
Position of Other States in Natural Gas Production
New Mexico and Louisiana rank third and fourth, respectively, with production of 4,151 and 3,817 billion cubic feet. The total production of these four states reaches 61.3% of the total natural gas production in the United States in 2025.
In addition to Texas, the Appalachian Basin is recognized as another major gas production hub in the country. The states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio have produced a total of 13,377 billion cubic feet, which equals 28% of the total natural gas production in the United States. This production mainly comes from the Marcellus and Utica formations.
Alaska, despite not being connected to the pipeline network of the lower states, ranks fifth, demonstrating the strength of this state's natural resources.
This high level of natural gas production in the United States has strengthened the country's position in global gas markets. With high natural gas production, the United States has become one of the main players in international markets.
