Helen of Troy in the Modern World: A Bitter and Controversial Comedy in London Theatre

The play 'Bloodshed' depicts new realities of society with the return of Helen of Troy to a world full of violence and misogyny.

At the Royal Stratford East Theatre in London, the play 'Bloodshed' by Ava Picket takes the audience into a modern world filled with social tensions. In this play, Helen of Troy, a symbol of beauty and love, returns to her home, but this time in a Towie-style living room where violence and misogyny are clearly visible.

Returning Home in a Chaotic World

This play is set against the backdrop of the English Civil Wars. Helen, after leaving her husband Marcus for a 'foreigner', encounters men who are seeking revenge. Meanwhile, a messenger dressed in Adidas style somewhat plays the role of a chorus, introducing us to the new developments in this England. Angry men come to Cee's house, Helen's close friend, and while taking Helen with them, they celebrate their victory by drinking Prosecco.

A Portrait of Contemporary Society

In this play, Ava Picket has succeeded in presenting a bitter and controversial image of today's society by combining classic myths with contemporary realities. As Helen struggles to find her identity in this new world, the audience will witness her emotional and social conflicts. This play not only addresses issues related to gender and power but also reminds us that history can repeat itself over and over again.

'Bloodshed', featuring a brilliant performance by Michelle Daukery as Helen, is currently being staged at the Royal Stratford East Theatre in London and will run until October 10. Can this play familiarize us with the realities of contemporary life or is it merely a recreation of the past?
