Returning to my hometown after six years of living in the United States and the United Kingdom was a different and sometimes difficult experience. Mexico City, which had always remained an familiar place in my mind, now seemed to have undergone significant changes.
Changes in the City
The first thing that caught my attention was the visible and cultural changes in Mexico City. This city, which had always been large and bustling, now felt significantly more international. New restaurants, international businesses, and an increasing number of people speaking English were signs of these changes. Some areas that were once familiar to me now seemed to belong to a new version of the city.
Despite the changes, some friends and acquaintances remained the same as before. The conversations I had with them conveyed a sense of familiarity to me, but at the same time, some of the stories and problems I heard seemed to have changed little. This contrast between the visible changes in the city and its social stability made me reflect on my own changes.
Changes in Myself
It seems that the past two years have affected me more than I had imagined. Living together with my partner has brought a new order to my days. I no longer plan my days solely for myself, and now we make joint decisions. These changes made me feel nostalgia and alienation upon returning to Mexico.
Ultimately, this journey showed me that not only has Mexico changed, but I have changed as well. I now clearly see that London has become my new home. Mexico still holds significance for me, but the center of my daily life is elsewhere.
